Sole Sm "Salzwasser" per. Wortschatz fach. (14. Jh.) Stammwort. Älter ist das Wort in der Bedeutung "Suhle" (ahd. sol, sul m./n., ae. sol n., solu; Soll, Suhle). Das Nebeneinander der Bedeutungen wie bei Lache1, Lake und Sülze. Entsprechend stehen neben dem jeweiligen Wort für Salz Wörter mit der Bedeutung "Morast u.ä." in air. sál m. "Schmutz, Schlacke, Fleck", kymr. hael "Schmutz, Dung, Moor", gr. hýlē "Sediment, Schlamm, körperliche Ausscheidung", lit. sùltis "Salzlake, Saft", akslav. slatina "Salzwasser, Meer", russ. sólot" "Morast, Sumpf". Es handelt sich um Wörter der Bedeutung "Salzwasser, Schlamm, Sediment", zu denen das Wort Salz als Ableitung ("Sediment") gehört. Da Schwundstufen neben a/o/ə-Vokalismus stehen, ist wohl von (ig.) * sə-ḷ auszugehen, in dem einerseits ə vor ḷ ausfallen, andererseits das l unsilbisch werden konnte. Salami.
